Peter Murphy and Nivek Ogre in a Horror Movie

Peter Murphy and Nivek Ogre in a Horror Movie

Recently the lovely folks over at World Goth Day posted a link about a new horror film in development with some familiar faces. According to the films creator Chris Alexander, Peter Murphy of Bauhaus and Nivek Ogre of Skinny Puppy will both play roles in the new film, with Peter starring.

The films plot seems somewhat elusive so far (Ive heard murder and very little else) but Chris Alexander did call it "an erotic, violent fever dream driven by mood, music and atmosphere" which could be either brilliant or awful, you know how it goes.

Of course, this wont be Peter Murphys first appearance in a horror film (or any films, recalling Twilight.) The Hunger, a vampire flick featuring David Bowie, has a memorable opening sequence that includes Peter Murphy singing Bela Lugosis Dead. Nivek Ogre also made an appearance in Repo! The Genetic Opera.

Of course this wouldnt be the first time a film which seems promising is announced and then flounders, but Ill keep my eye out for Peter and Nivek and see if anything else comes to light.

Assuming the film makes it out of development, would you go to see it?

Paul Volckers Op Ed

Paul Volckers Op Ed

I think it’s safe to say that Yves Smith and I don’t see eye-to-eye on much. But on Paul Volcker’s latest op-ed, we largely agree: Volcker simlpy doesn’t get it. I have the utmost respect for Volcker, but he seems to be fighting old battles. He emphasizes the importance of — and the need to extend the safety net to — depository institutions like commercial banks. He contrasts commercial banks with "capital market institutions," which he does not believe should have access to the safety net. Capital market institutions, Volcker believes, should "be free … to innovate, to trade, to speculate, to manage private pools of capital — and as ordinary businesses in a capitalist economy, to fail."

I’m sorry, but were we watching the same financial crisis? The clear lesson from the financial crisis is that certain capital market institutions are every bit as important to the day-to-day functioning of the modern economy as commercial banks. That’s a positive statement, not a normative one. Lehman Brothers was not a commercial bank, and yet its failure had catastrophic consequences for the global economy.

If anything, Volcker is not advocating enough government intervention. Capital market institutions need to be given access to the safety net — but just as with commercial banks, access to the safety net has to come with stringent regulation to limit the amount of risk that capital market institutions can take on. As Yves says:
The world has evolved so that many market making activities are now as essential to commerce as deposit gathering and lending. Those activities are de facto backstopped; there is simply no ready way back here (trust me, even if there were, it would take twenty years, and we’d still need an interim solution). We need to regulate those activities aggressively, including requiring much more capital to support them, and strict limits as to how much and what type of credit these firms can extend to hedge fund and other speculative investors.
If you accept that certain capital market institutions have become just as important to the day-to-day functioning of the modern economy as commercial banks — and given what we witnessed in September 2008, I don’t see how that could be seriously disputed — then how can you justify extending the safety net (with stringent regulations, of course) to commercial banks, but not to those capital market institutions? Volcker essentially wants to implement a resolution authority for capital market institutions, and then send them on their way (leaving them "free to innovate, to trade, to speculate, to manage private pools of capital"). While I think a resolution authority is the most important element of financial regulatory reform, I certainly don’t think it’s sufficient. We need to extend the formula for commercial bank regulation (safety net access + stringent regulation) to capital market institutions. Volcker seems to be pretending that the lesson of the financial crisis is that we just need to clamp down harder on commercial banks. I think that’s misguided.

Passing Functions To Functions In C C Java

Passing Functions To Functions In C C Java

Before I start the article, I admit I used the word "Function" a little loosely in the title. Functions are available in C++, but in C# and Java it would be more appropriate to call them methods of a class because of the Object Oriented approach followed by these languages.

There are a lot of situations where we write modules such that other developers have the flexibility to fine-tune them to meet their requirements. Assume we are writing a module (function/method) wherein a function/method will be called in the middle of its execution but we don’t know the implementation of this function/method nor its actual name. Wouldnt it nice if we could just leave the implementation of the function/method to the developer who will be using the module?

This is exactly what I target in this blog-post. The article will give a quick overview of how to pass a function (actually a reference to a function) to another function in C++; how to create and use delegates in C#; and finally how to simulate a similar effect in Java which has neither pointers nor delegates.

To help the readers understand the concept better, I will be taking a simple example here. In the example, there is an addition module which takes three arguments - two integers and a function/method which is the display routine. Its not a real-world example as I could have just returned the sum back.

An apt real-world example for this approach would a customized sort routine which takes a function/method which can be used as a comparator for the sort. I will leave it to the users to think of more complex situations where such an approach will be beneficial.

Function Pointers in C++

A Function Pointer is a pointer in C/C++ which points to a function. When dereferenced, a function pointer will result in the execution of the function it points to. A function pointer is defined as -

return_type (*function_name)(argument_list)

An important point that is to be noticed here is that the signature of the function to which the pointer can point to has to be declared in the declaration of the pointer. Once that is done, it can be assigned to any function which follows that signature.

Here is an example C++ program which uses function pointers -

Function pointers play a very important in Callback layered architectures. For example, function pointers can be used to register a function with an event handler.

Delegates in C#

A delegate is a type that references to a method. When a method is assigned to a delegate, the delegate behaves exactly like the method. A delegate in C# is defined as -

access_modfier delegate return_type delegate_name(argument_list)

Similar to Function Pointers in C/C++, the method signature has to be specified in the definition of the delegate. But unlike function pointers, delegates are type safe. This is because since Function Pointers are basically pointers, even an improper assignment will not raise any error until it’s too late. On the other hand delegates are associated with the signature specified and any wrong assignment will lead to a compilation error.

Another important feature of delegates is that delegates can be chained together. That is, multiple functions can be executed when the delegate is called. This is done through + and - operations on delegates. Here is how the syntax looks -

delegate_name reference_name;
reference_name = method1_name;
reference_name += method2_name;

Now when reference_name is called, both method1_name and method2_name are executed one after another.

Delegates also allow methods to be passed to other methods using lambda expressions, which can be written in the method call itself. Go through the following example which shows how to use delegates for method passing and how lambda expressions are useful -

Delegates are very useful in event handling, for defining callback methods like a customized sort, etc.

Simulation Using Interfaces in Java

Ok, now coming to the fun part. How can I get the same effect in Java which has neither Function Pointers nor Delegates?

The approach which have discussed above can be simulated in Java using single method Interfaces. The single method interface can be implemented and the class can become an argument of the method. The concrete class passed to the method is used to call the one and only method of the interface.

However, there are three major drawbacks in this -

  • Every developer using the method is forced to create a class implementing the interface
  • The name of the function is fixed, the implementation will change but not its name
  • We are not passing the method anymore but instead passing an object which has the required method

Similar to C#, the interface implementation can be done in-line to the method call using anonymous classes.

Here is a Java program which achieves the same result as the above two examples -

As we know, C# was heavily influenced by Java. So, almost everything that we can do in Java can be done in C#. The interface technique discussed for Java can also be applied in C#, but I guess it’s more easy to use Delegates for such a requirement than creating Interfaces.

passionfruit curd pie

passionfruit curd pie

Guys, I got cocky.

After the triumph that was last month's epic #pieamonth pear and creme fraiche caramel pie, I thought I had it.

I'm a pie expert now! I thought to myself a few weeks ago, as I woke up early to create my next #pieamonth pie. This is going to be a breeze. It doesn't even have a lattice! I'm just going to do as I do — roll out my pie, stick it in the freezer, prep the filling — and go grab a pastry with Jessica. By the time I'm back, it'll be ready for the oven.

One chocolate ganache kouign amann and crazy delicious violet cheesecake later, I stuck the beautifully rolled and perfectly crimped frozen crust to pre-bake in the oven.

Pre-baking is often required when baking a custard or curd pie — the moisture in the filling can make the crust soggy before it has time to actually bake. The point of pre-baking it beforehand without any filling is to give the crust a head start to bake and ultimately solidify before the filling, helping the crust stay firm and prevent soggy bottomed crusts. However, you can't just bake the pie shell without weight to hold it down in the middle — as the crust bakes, pockets of steam get created within the pastry that cause it to puff up and ultimately sag around the edges. You need that weight to hold it down, which is why most pre-baking recipes instruct you to line your shell with aluminum foil or parchment paper filled with pie weights.

So I was placing my beautifully rolled, crimped, lined, and weighted pie in the oven, the parchment paper holding my pie weights gently brushed my countertop oven's heat source and burst into flame.

Have you ever seen parchment paper catch on fire? Especially the cheap kind you can buy in bulk on Amazon that's so thin and tissue papery that you often need to use two or three sheets at a time?

Well, it burns up like gangbusters.

My cat watched in judgement as I screamed, dropped the pan containing the pie, and hastily picked up the flaming inferno formerly known as my parchment paper and lobbed it into my sink. Hundreds of ceramic pie weights flew across the kitchen, making a racket as they bounced across the kitchen floor and rolled to irretrievable places underneath the oven and refrigerator.

I turned to see if my beautifully prepared shell was salvageable. NOPE. I found it lying face down on the ground in a pretty sorry state: half-melted on one side, covered in bits of ash and floor lint.

And that, my friends, is what happens when you get cocky when making pie.

Some baker's notes:
  • You can use either fresh passionfruit juice (with the seeds strained out) or frozen passionfruit puree in this recipe. Fresh passionfruit was a little hard for me to source, but I would occasionally (and rather randomly) see it at major supermarkets like Whole Foods and even Safeway. You can also use passionfruit puree, which can be found in the frozen section of Latin American markets or even online (but for a much steeper price). Whatever you do though, don't use artificial/shelf-stable passionfruit juice. They put a ton of extra sweetener and artificial preservatives in there that'll just ruin your curd.

  • I've already explained pre-baking science, so I won't repeat myself here. One word of advice though — if you have a small oven similar to mine, perhaps use a non flammable material like aluminum foil to line your pie instead. You also don't need to use fancy ceramic pie weights — you can use rice, beans, or even coins! Just make sure you use a generous amount of weight; if you don't use enough, the crust sags in the middle and destroys your beautiful crimp. Which is what happened to me the second time I made this pie.

Pants Self Sufficiency

Pants Self Sufficiency

Before I could crack on with any of my proposed nippy weather sewing projects, I needed to take care of my foundations! I didnt have quite enough pairs in rotation, and regularly ended up wearing my least favourite pairs. Also, if I were to achieve a goal of mine (pants self-sufficiency) I had to make some more pairs so I could finally get rid of my final three pairs of shop-bought pants. I now only own self-made pants!

Pattern:

It may not surprise you to learn that these, and all the other pairs I own, were made using my free downloadable pants/undies/knickers pattern. What can I say?! Its exactly what I want from a knickers pattern: low-rise with good bum coverage. This pattern has been downloaded over 34,000 times now! I chose to release the pattern as a free one rather to be paid for because I really want to encourage sewers to try making their own undies, and I know that a download doesnt equate a use, but Im really happy with that amount of initial interest at least.

If you visit my Free Sewing Patterns page you will see that I have included an easy way to show your appreciation by buying me a coffee via paypal. Out of interest, do you want to know how many people out of that 34,000 have done that so far? 31! Obviously, I didnt release either of the free patterns in the pursuit to make money, but I do really appreciate it when a user of the pattern decides to acknowledge the time that went into producing them by fuelling me with caffeine!

Fabric and Elastic:

I have made MANY pairs of pants from this pattern now, and by now Ive got a pretty good idea of what type of knit I feel will work best. I like a medium-weight cotton jersey with a decent elastane content, the type that is suitable for form fitting T-shirts. So I raided my knit-fabric-scraps bin for suitable pieces left over from previous projects. Plus, all the elastic was from my stash, so I had no immediate outlay for this little lot.

The cream coloured floral pair aside, they were all made using FOE (fold over elastic) that came from a variety of sources (mostly eBay). Right now, my blogs sponsor The Village Haberdashery, has a lovely range of FOE in stock, including the awesome neon orange that I used on the cream floral pair pictured above. If you would like some tips on how to use FOE, check out the blog post I wrote for The Daily Stitch which published this week.

The only other type of elastic I used this time round was some of the gorgeous cotton elastic from my other sponsor, Textile Garden. Its the delicate lilac and duck-egg scalloped stuff that you can see in the picture below. I wrote more about her cotton elastic selection in this blog post around this time last year.

Thoughts:

Ive been aiming to eliminate all the shop-bought pants from my undies drawer for years and it feels fantastic to have finally made the leap! Maybe one day Ill get to a similar position with bras, then Marks & Spencer really will have seen the last of me.... Oh wait, theres still tights. Anyways, these pants are fun and comfy, just what I was hoping for. If youd like to see examples of how other people have used my free patterns, check out this Pinterest board. And if youve used either of the free patterns and you feel like sharing the results, Id love to see so pleassseeeeee send me a pic or a link.

Penguin Palooza!

Penguin Palooza!

Hey everyone!  January has been flying by!  Not without my little ones learning about penguins first.  I took out my load of books for January and these are just some of the books I have on penguins.

I have so many "Tacky the Penguin" stories its just not normal.  The kids love it too.  They always have a blast learning about penguins.  Their favorite fact is when I tell them that MILLIONS of years ago penguins could fly.  They just cant wrap their heads around it!  I mean seriously… can you imaging these little guys flying?  Id be terrified!

We started doing some work from my Playful Penguins Pack.  They did such a great job with it.

Finally, last week we started the craft.  Can I just say, this is the best cutting I have seen my class do all year.  They really enjoyed making these.  Didnt they came out so cute?

We have to work on the writing prompt next week.

Peter Cottontails Tail DIY Pom Poms

Peter Cottontails Tail DIY Pom Poms

I find myself buying yarn often in hopes of making lots of pom poms, but truth be told, Ive really only made one set of them in my entire life.  They turned out just how Id wanted, and they were really easy to make.  Im not sure why I dont make them more often.

A few winters ago, I shared some winter ornaments Id made for my white January tree.  As I was putting them away this year, it hit me that the white pom poms Id hung on the tree would make the perfect tail for Peter this Easter.   So when I was getting out my Easter decor, I went back to my winter tote, pulled one of the pom poms out,  fluffed it up a bit, trimmed it down, and hot glued it to a bunny silhouette (click here for the one I used).

You can click here for my DIY winter ornament post.  I have several ornaments, but the pom poms I made and used for the cottontail were made using Bernat Boa yarn in Dove, and I followed this Martha Stewart video: How To Make Mini Yarn Pom Poms.  Really simple!

The bunny silhouette I used came from Matthew Mead.  He actually used a white carnation for the tail, and I love that look as well.  Check out his entire white Easter collection on Pinterest here.  So, so gorgeous!!

So, what are your Easter plans?  An egg hunt or two, family time,  enjoying the beauties of spring, and lots of candy?  Thats what well be up to.  Enjoy this special holiday!

Thanks so much for stopping by!  I hope you found a little something worth your time.
